Eternal Figth Between Barong Against Rangda



 
Barong and Rangda already known in pre-Hindu. Barong is a symbol of goodness while rangda is a symbol of wickedness. The realization of the Barong form is a quadruped resembling a lion and Rangda is a scary form with spiky fangs in her mouth. This legend begins from the curse that given to beautiful queen named Ratih. The reason why Ratih is cursed because Ratih has many vices. So she was cursed to be a very frightening creature with two spiky fang in her mouth, long hair dangling to the ground, big eyes and stared, also long nails in every fingers.

To bring back the original form (beautiful queen), she had to kill Sahadewa (son of Goddess Kunti). When doing this, Ratih accompanied by one of her students named Kalika. But in the end, Ratih was failed and apologize to Sahadewa, her apology was accepted by Sahadewa. After knowing that Ratih was defeated, her student Kalika wants to avenge the defeat. With confidence Kalika comes to Sahadewa, because he think he was already stronger than before.
In this fight, several time Kalika change his form. First, he turns into a very great boar, but it can defeated by Sahadewa. With his remaining strength, Kalika transform again become a big crow. It was useless, Sahadewa still unbeaten. Finally, Kalika can not take it anymore and use his full power. He changed into Rangda form. Because of its strength, Sahadewa become compilated to beat it. For winning the figth, Sahadewa transform into Barong. They continue to fight relentlessly. But, their strength are balance, then nothing is lost or won. So this became an eternal fight. 

This legend has taught us that the good things against the bad things is the eternal struggle in every human life.

The Story of Barong Landung

Barong Landung is a pair giant human puppet almost three meters high, one figure is a man in black face, and the other is a beautiful princess in white face. Balinese Hinduism believes that the Barong Landung is the replica of king Jaya Pangus and his wife Kang Cing Wie from China. 







The Story of Barong Landung:
This story about King Sri Jaya Pangus with queen Kang Cing Wie, who came from the land of China. After a long marriage they still have no child. After permitted by Kang Cing Wie, King Jaya Pangus decided to do meditation to Mount Batur. On his way he met a very beautiful princess, Dewi Danu. King Jaya Pangus lied to Dewi Danu, and said that he was unmarried. Finally they got marriage, and a son was born, named Mayadenawa. For a long time Jaya Pangus not back home, then Kang Ching Wie followed and searched him to Mount Batur. After arrived, Kang Cing Wie saw Jaya Pangus was with a new wife and a son. Dewi Danu was also shocked and became aware of her husband’s apparently been lying. Dewi Danu reported this to her mother, Betari Danu. In anger, with her magic power she burned Jaya Pangus and his wife Kang Cing Wie. The Kingdom was grieving over the death of their king and queen, so as a form of devotion and love for the king and queen, the people made a replica statue of Jaya Pangus and Kang Cing Wie (known as Barong Landung) and worship.

BARONG KET KET

Barong Bali is one of the many kinds of performing arts in Bali . Barong is a traditional Balinese dance which is characterized by body masks and costumes that can be worn by one or two people to dance. In Bali there are several types of barong the Barong Ket, Barong Bangkal, Barong Landung, Barong Macan, Barong Gajah, Barong Asu, Barong Brutuk, Barong Lembu, Barong Kedingkling, Barong kambing, and Barong Gagombrangan .



Barong Ket or Barong Keket is a high figure barong. His figure resembles a tall man with two adult height. Male figure called Jero Gede, while his partner called Jero Luh. That said, barong kind made to trick the spirits who spread disaster. Barong Ket dance is the most numerous in Bali and most often staged. Of his form, Barong Ket is a fusion between the shape of lions, tigers, cows and dragons. Agency Barong Ket is decorated with intricately carved leather and hundreds of small glass mirrors. The glass of the mirror and looked like a shimmering jewel when hit by light. Barong Ket bristles made from a combination perasok (similar plant pandan leaf fibers) and fibers. There also replace the fibers with crow feathers. Barong Ket danced by two dancers called the Messiah or Savior Bapang Saluk. Bapang interpreter first danced the head, Interpreter Bapang others in the tail. Barong Ket usually danced in pairs with Rangda, the sinister figure who symbolizes adharma (evil). Barong Ket himself into the dance symbolizes dharma (virtue). Rangda and Barong Ket pair symbolizes the eternal battle andara two opposite things (rwa bhineda) in this universe.
