Pengerebongan Ceremony from Kesiman Village

Paradise Island has many unique ceremonies and Pengerebongan is one of the amazing ceremonies. Pengerebongan is a ceremony conducted by Kesiman Village’s Society in Pura Dalam Pengerebongan.

This ceremony is held every 210days, exactly Friday Wuku Medangsia according to the Balinese calendar system or the day after Kuningan Day. Pengerebongan Ceremony was taken from the Kawi language “Rebu”, it means party and makes us happy. This ceremony was created by Puri Agung Kesiman (Agung Kesiman Empire).

Before conducting this ceremony, Kesiman society does Tabuh Rah (Sowing chicken blood that used ceremony). The entire God’s Manifestation in Kesiman Village like Barong, Rangda, and Pratima comes to Pura Dalem Pengerebongan. After that, all the society of Kesiman Village is rounding the Wantilan (the building in the middle area of Temple) three times. So many people are trance when the people bring God’s Manifestation and they lost their control.

After rounding 3 times, the entire God’s Manifestation is put in Gedong (the holy place to put God’s Manifestation). The societies pray together in Pura Dalem Pengerebongan. The function of the Pengerebongan Ceremony is reminding the human about Tri Hita Karana Concept (three of the harmony, balance to create peace and happiness). Don’t miss this ceremony, because it’s awesome and amazing but a little bit mystic.

The History of Endek Textile
Endek textile is beginning to grow on since the 18th century when Dalem Waturenggong Empire was being kinged in Gelgel Klungkung. It grows fastly in around Gelgel, especially in Sulang Village. The growing is very faster when Indonesia got its independent. Sulang Village is being the biggest industry of Endek Textile in Bali until today.

When Endek Textile appeared, the workers make it with ikat system (traditional ways to make textiles) and they use ATBM “Alat Tenun Bukan Mesin” (un-machine tool looms). Why is the price of Endek Textile so expensive? Because the workers use the manual system, so it takes a too long time for finishing only one Endek Textile. But now, the industry of textile uses the machine and make the price of Endek Textile is cheaper.

Endek Textile has so many motifs, such use the natural motif, the animal motif, the Balinese puppet motif, and the sacred motif. The sacred motif must use in the temple, so why it’s called by the sacred motif. Don’t worry if you want to buy Endek textile, you can choose the other motif.

Art cannot be separated from Balinese people's daily life. Bali has own art style. Painting is one of Balinese art. Ubud painting style, Batuan painting style, and Kamasan painting style are the painting style that Bali had. Kamasan painting style is the oldest painting style, is appeared in the 14th century when Dalem Waturenggong being in the golden period. Kamasan painting style comes from Kamasan Village in Klungkung Regency. It’s about 43km from Denpasar or 1,5hours.

Kamasan style is a very unique style, many collectors say, Kamasan painting style has good power, very smooth, clearly and not noisy with the detail. Kamasan painting styles usually take from Ramayana story, Mahabarata story, Sutasoma holy book and many more. The color of the Kamasan painting style is very easy to know because the color’s background is russet. The russet color comes from gambir stone that mixed by water.

Sanghyang dance is one of the holy dance. Sanghyang Memedi is one kind of Sanghyang dance. Memedi is one of the Balinese ghosts. This dance is almost extinct because it’s less popular than other Sanghyang dance. This dance is very mystic & scary. Sanghyang Memedi was danced by the old man, and they use leaves and paddy.

The dance started from Pemangku (the Hindu religious leader) does a prayer, after that the men who dance Sanghyang Memedi will be a trance. They lost their control and follow the gamelan (Balinese music), they jump into the coconut leaves burned. They don’t feel hot.

Megibung was introduced by Karangasem King, I Gusti Agung Anglurah Ketut Karangasem in the 16th century. When Karangasem attack The Lombok Kingdom, The king asked the soldier to eat together. 

After we prepare the ceremony, we usually do Megibung. We usually served Balinese food; like Lawar, Sate Lilit, and suckling pig, chicken roast with Balinese ingredient when we do Megibung. All are eaten with the hand, not used a spoon and we usually drink the Tuak (palm wine) after Megibung activity. It is a very intimate and social way of sharing food, as well as being more economical and better for the environment: no plates, cutlery or plastic!. So, Mengibung is Balinese unique culture that you must try.

Sekumpul Waterfall located in Sekumpul Village, Sawan District, Buleleng Regency. It’s about 82 km from Denpasar City, or it takes more less 3 hours. Sekumpul mean “a group of”, so that means Sekumpul Waterfall is a group of waterfall, because Sekumpul Waterfall consists from 6 waterfalls. . It has high about 80 meters or 262 feet tall. 

Getting the waterfall you need to walk on the path and some stair. Don’t worry if you feel so tired, I believe you will come freshly because shade by a lot of tree. There are several gazebos on the roadside and you can view the waterfall from distance. If you need to reach the waterfall and feel the water, you need to get down a slope and cross the river. We recommend you to use short and sandal to get through this rough terrain. This place is good place for relaxation and meditation because you can feel fresh atmosphere and also quite place.
